Biography

Mustakkima Afrin is a lecturer in economics and business at Waltham Forest College. She holds a PhD in Environmental Economics from Aberystwyth University and is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Her research focuses on the economic and social valuation of biodiversity and ecosystem services, as well as the development of sustainable solutions to pressing ecological challenges.

She has applied a wide range of non-market valuation methods, including choice experiments, contingent valuation, contingent behavior, and the travel cost method. Her studies have explored diverse natural resource and environmental issues such as freshwater ecosystems, water quality, socio-economic impacts, agri-environmental schemes, recreation, and tourism.

More recently, her research has increasingly examined the human welfare impacts of biodiversity loss and innovative approaches to integrating environmental considerations into economic policy and practice, particularly in developing countries.
